At the sight of two hostile naked blades, we fled,

crowding into the copses on the cliffs;

but for every one of us that ran,

another advanced to pelt and attack;

and if these were repulsed the first lot took up stones again.

The extraordinary thing was,

that in spite of the thousands of stones we hurled

not one of them managed to hit these victims of the goddess.

Finally we wore them down, but it wasn’t courage.

We’d hemmed them in and when they were off their guard

we knocked the swords out of their hands with stones.

They simply sank to their knees, exhausted.
